Occupational Therapy promotes health and wellness by helping individuals achieve the highest level of independence in all facets of life. As a member of the health care team, an Occupational Therapist works along with a patient to assure that a meaningful and satisfying life is possible, despite limits brought on by injury or illness. Occupational Therapists focus on the social, emotional and physical effects of conditions while helping to change the environment, and provide equipment and education to promote strength, coordination and better movement in terms of a patient's Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides Occupational Therapy under the direction and supervision of the Occupational Therapist.

At Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Occupational Therapists work together with patients, and the families of patients, who may be experiencing:

work-related injuries including repetitive stress injuries
limitations following a stroke, traumatic brain injury or heart attack
orthopedic injuries of the hand, elbow, tendons and shoulder
arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or other serious chronic conditions
injuries resulting in the need for customized splints
birth, learning or developmental disabilities
spinal cord injuries, or amputation
vision or problems with awareness that threaten ability to participate in meaningful activities such as care-giving or driving
pediatric conditions
inability to continue work activities

Occupational Therapists promote health by:

decreasing pain and stress
promoting strength, endurance, joint range of motion and coordination
modifying barriers in the environment
providing adaptive equipment for independence
promoting independence in daily activity
educating on health, wellness and daily living independence

Occupational Therapy is offered at Tamarac. Occupational Therapy services require physician direction, including a prescription for services. While many insurance companies reimburse for Occupational Therapy services, it is the patient’s responsibility to confirm coverage. Every effort will be made by the rehabilitation and wellness department to assist patients through this process.
