Physical Therapy promotes health and wellness by preventing the onset and/or slowing the progression of physical conditions caused by injury, disease or aging. As a member of the health care team, a Physical Therapist evaluates and treats individuals of all ages who have experienced functional changes resulting from pain, orthopedic injury, surgery and its impact on the body, neurological injury, congenital defects, wounds, inflammation and injuries related to work and sports. The physical therapy staff of Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial has advanced training in the following:

  • Aquatic Therapy
  • Myofascial Therapy
  • Vestibular therapy
  • Athlete Rehabilitation and Injury Prevention
  • Crainiosacral Therapy
  • Wound Care
  • Urinary Incontinence
  • McKenzie Mechanical Therapy and Diagnosis.
     

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) provides Physical Therapy under the direction and supervision of the Physical Therapist. At Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants work together with patients, and families of patients, who may be experiencing:

  • work-related injuries including lower back or neck problems
  • limitations following a stroke, traumatic brain injury or heart attack
  • arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or other serious chronic conditions
  • orthopedic injuries and post-surgical conditions
  • birth injuries or developmental disabilities
  • back and neck conditions
  • burns, spine injuries, or amputations
  • broken bones or other injuries from falls, sports injuries, or accidents
  • urinary incontinence and pelvic pain
  • chronic pain
  • osteoporosis (bone loss)
  • balance disorders
  • sports medicine conditions

Physical Therapists promote health by:

  • decreasing pain and stress
  • preventing weakening conditions such as osteoporosis
  • restoring and promoting strength, endurance, joint range of motion and coordination
  • correcting loss of balance
  • restoring mobility
  • providing health education and support
  • educating and training patients on energy-efficient postures and mechanics for optimal work performance

Physical Therapy Services are offered at two Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Outpatient Therapy sites. Services require physician direction, including a prescription. While many insurance companies reimburse for Physical Therapy services, it is the patient's responsibility to confirm coverage. Every effort will be made by the Rehabilitation and Wellness Department to assist patients through this process.
