Speech-Language Pathologists, also referred to as Speech Therapists, assess speech and language development, treat language and speech disorders and help people with swallowing problems. The Speech Therapist Assistant (STA) assists the Speech Therapist in providing these services.

At Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial, the Speech-Language Pathologist works with other rehabilitation and medical professionals plus the patient's family to provide a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan for any of the following:

  • nervous system disorders cerebral palsy, meningitis, encephalopathy
  • neurological damage resulting from stroke or traumatic brain injury
  • gastrointestinal conditions
  • premature birth or low birth weight
  • cleft lip or palate
  • conditions affecting the airway
  • head and neck cancer
  • stuttering
  • problems in communication requiring alternative communication aides
  • voice and vocal cord dysfunction

Speech Therapists promote health by:

  • improving speech disorders or asphasia
  • improving swallowing disorders or dysphagia
  • improving articulation or sound production disorders
  • developing alternative communication systems
  • enhancing communication effectiveness
  • enhancing cognitive function - memory problem solving/attention deficit

Speech Therapy is offered at Tamarac. Speech Therapy services require physician direction, including a prescription for services. While many insurance companies reimburse for Speech Therapy services, it is the patient's responsibility to confirm coverage. Every effort will be made by the rehabilitation and wellness department to assist patients through this process.
