Local Doctor Receives Prestigious College Award

Fremont, MI September 22, 2006 Students in the Physician Assistant (PA)program at Western Michigan University (WMU) have honored Dr. Steven Bumb as “Preceptor of the Year.”

Dr. Bumb is an Internal Medicine and Pediatric Specialist with Main Street Medical Center of Gerber Memorial Health Services.

“Preceptors (teachers on the job) are an extension of our program,” offered Sherrill Busboom, MA, PA-C, and Master Faculty Specialist in the Physician Assistant Program of the College of Health and Human Services at WMU. “They share their time, their expertise, and most importantly, they share their patients. And they do this without compensation, only the reward of knowing they are shaping the way medicine is practiced because of their influence.”

The “Preceptor of the Year” award has been part of Western’s PA graduation program for the last five years. He has been described as an excellent teacher and physician by WMU staff.

“He is an extraordinary practitioner in both his genuine ability to care for his patients and his extensive knowledge,” said Tim Carlisle, PA student. “For me he set the standard for the type of practitioner I will continue to strive to be. He is an excellent teacher and has a unique gift to be able to explain the most complex cases/diseases in the simplest ways. I feel fortunate to have been able to spend two months in Fremont with (him).”

Trista Paone, RN, PA-C and Chief Physician Assistant, Intervention Radiology at Indiana University Hospital and former student of Dr. Bumb recounts,” Seeing him in action made me realize how much responsibility we as medical practitioners have to do the right thing for our patients.”

Dr. Bumb, directs the Keystone Project in the GMHS Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the hospital in partnership with Johns Hopkins Hospital. The project involves implementing medical interventions that are proven to decrease mortality, length of stay for a patient and reduce costs.
