Rehabilitation Services
Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy promotes health and wellness by preventing the onset and/or slowing the progression of physical conditions caused by injury, disease or aging. As a member of the health care team, a Physical Therapist evaluates and treats individuals of all ages who have experienced functional changes resulting from pain, orthopedic injury, surgery and its impact on the body, neurological injury, congenital defects, wounds, inflammation and injuries related to work and sports. The physical therapy staff of Gerber Memorial Health Services has advanced training in the following:
- Myofascial Therapy
- Crainiosacral Therapy
- Wound Care
- Urinary Incontinence
- McKenzie Mechanical Therapy and Diagnosis.
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) provides Physical Therapy under the direction and supervision of the Physical Therapist. At Gerber Memorial Health Services Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants work together with patients, and families of patients, who may be experiencing:
- work-related injuries including lower back or neck problems
- limitations following a stroke, traumatic brain injury or heart attack
- arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or other serious chronic conditions
- orthopedic injuries and post-surgical conditions
- birth injuries or developmental disabilities
- back and neck conditions
- burns, spine injuries, or amputations
- broken bones or other injuries from falls, sports injuries, or accidents
- urinary incontinence and pelvic pain
- chronic pain
- osteoporosis (bone loss)
- balance disorders
- sports medicine conditions
Physical Therapists promote health by:
- decreasing pain and stress
- preventing weakening conditions such as osteoporosis
- restoring and promoting strength, endurance, joint range of motion and coordination
- correcting loss of balance
- restoring mobility
- providing health education and support
- educating and training patients on energy-efficient postures and mechanics for optimal work performance
Physical Therapy Services are offered at all three Gerber Memorial Health Services Outpatient Therapy sites. Services require physician direction, including a prescription. While many insurance companies reimburse for Physical Therapy services, it is the patient's responsibility to confirm coverage. Every effort will be made by the Rehabilitation and Wellness Department to assist patients through this process.

Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy promotes
health and wellness by helping individuals achieve the highest level of
independence
in all facets of life. As a member of the health care team, an Occupational Therapist works
along with a patient to assure that a meaningful and satisfying life is
possible, despite limits brought on by injury or
illness. Occupational Therapists focus on the social, emotional and
physical effects of conditions while helping to change the environment,
and provide equipment and education to promote strength, coordination and
better movement in terms of a patient's Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).
The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides Occupational Therapy under the direction and supervision of the Occupational Therapist.
At Gerber Memorial Health Services Occupational Therapists work together with patients, and the families of patients, who may be experiencing:
- work-related injuries including repetitive stress injuries
- limitations following a stroke, traumatic brain injury or heart attack
- orthopedic injuries of the hand, elbow, tendons and shoulder
- arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or other serious chronic conditions
- injuries resulting in the need for customized splints
- birth, learning or developmental disabilities
- spinal cord injuries, or amputation
- vision or problems with awareness that threaten ability to participate in meaningful activities such as care-giving or driving
- pediatric conditions
- inability to continue work activities
Occupational Therapists promote health by:
- decreasing pain and stress
- promoting strength, endurance, joint range of motion and coordination
- modifying barriers in the environment
- providing adaptive equipment for independence
- promoting independence in daily activity
- educating on health, wellness and daily living independence

Speech Therapy
Speech-Language Pathologists, also
referred to as Speech Therapists, assess speech and language development,
treat language and speech disorders and help people with swallowing problems. The
Speech Therapist Assistant (STA) assists
the Speech Therapist in providing these services.
At Gerber Memorial Health Services, the Speech-Language Pathologist works with other rehabilitation and medical professionals plus the patient's family to provide a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan for any of the following:
- nervous system disorders cerebral palsy, meningitis, encephalopathy
- neurological damage resulting from stroke or traumatic brain injury
- gastrointestinal conditions
- premature birth or low birth weight
- cleft lip or palate
- conditions affecting the airway
- head and neck cancer
- stuttering
- problems in communication requiring alternative communication aides
- voice and vocal cord dysfunction
Speech Therapists promote health by:
- improving speech disorders or asphasia
- improving swallowing disorders or dysphagia
- improving articulation or sound production disorders
- developing alternative communication systems
- enhancing communication effectiveness
- enhancing cognitive function - memory problem solving/attention deficit

Wellness
Gerber Memorial Personal Fitness Program, offered through Gerber Memorial
Health Services, can assist you on your personal path for a lifetime of health
and wellness. This independent exercise program allows you and your family
to participate in aerobic and strengthening activities in a safe and comfortable
environment. Wellness is offered at all three Rehabilitation Clinics which
provide cardio machines, weight machines and free weights. Pool classes, group
exercise and personal training are available.* Times of operation will vary
for each facility so please call ahead.
